Embracing the blank page of a new year

As a writer, I love a crisp, clean page.

A blank slate upon which to create.

This is true when I journal with pen-in-hand, and when I’m sitting with my fingers poised over the keyboard as the cursor waits for me to begin.

But most writers will tell you that a blank page can be overwhelming, too.

That vast empty space just longs for words to fill it, yet a need for perfection props up the writer’s block that often prevails.

At its root may be all kinds of issues of which we’re not even aware.

Anxiety over saying the wrong thing.

Worry that it won’t make sense.

Fear of  what others may think.

As we leave the overcrowded page of last year behind, and gaze upon the new year ahead, I wonder what words you’ll choose to fill the blank page of your life.

I wonder what fears may be holding you back.

What insecurities may be whispering in your ear.

What wonderful plans God has for you that you may be too timid or proud to embrace.

In my own life, I’m finding that He can use the entire continuum of my emotions for His good purposes—if I let Him.

Sorrow transformed to joy.

Fear transformed to courage.

Anxiety transformed to peace.

Resistance transformed to surrender.

All made possible by God’s almighty grace.

When I release my white-knuckle grip on the blank page of my life and give it over to Him, God can use all the pages of my past to create beautiful things.

Things that would never have occurred to me if I were writing those words alone.

I encourage you to embrace the mighty plans that God has for you in the year ahead.

To let go of the negative emotions that may be holding you back.

To surrender your blank page to Him—trusting that He knows the perfect words with which to fill it in the context of His incredible love for you.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
