Love thy neighbor

My dad was always a fabulous neighbor.

He built us two houses and worked on our cars, so he knew how to fix most anything.

It was common to see Dad load up his tools and head out to help someone fix a roof or build a deck or get a car running again.

I never remember my father turning down someone in need if he was able to help.

That’s the kind of neighborliness to which Jesus calls us.

He doesn’t say we should love those who agree with us, or look and act like us, or share the same religious beliefs as we do.

He simply says that we should love our neighbors as ourselves.

That we should treat others the way we want to be treated.

My dad expressed his love for God by living by that Golden Rule.

Because it’s the kind of neighborly love that Jesus wants us to show.

Romans 15: 1-2 (NIV)
Matthew 22: 37-39 (NIV)
Luke 6:31 (NASB)
